Is transparency preserved?

Yes — AVIF has a full alpha channel, so nothing is flattened. This is the key difference from converting to JPG, which paints transparent pixels white.

How much smaller than PNG?

Graphics and screenshots typically shrink 70–90%; photographic PNGs even more. PNG pays for lossless storage in bytes, and AVIF simply does not.

What happens to metadata?

AVIF output is written clean — any EXIF or text chunks in the PNG are stripped, which for published graphics is usually the safer default.

Is it private?

Yes. The conversion happens entirely on your device — the image is read, re-encoded and saved without ever touching a network.
