Why an AVIF can still shrink

File size in AVIF is a dial, not a property — and most encoders ship with the dial set timidly high. Re-encoding at quality 60–70 often halves a “quality 90” file with no visible change; the before/after compare tells you exactly when to stop. Target-size mode instead searches out the best quality under a hard cap like 200 KB. When a file must open in older software, AVIF to JPG is one click away, and the image compressor handles mixed batches.

What re-encoding changes

The output is a clean still AVIF: EXIF and GPS metadata are stripped (a privacy plus for web-bound images) and transparency is preserved exactly. Lossy generations do stack, so recompress from the best source you have, not from an already-crunched copy. Opening AVIF at all needs a current browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari from 16.1.

Frequently asked questions

How much can an AVIF shrink?

It depends how it was made: quality-90 exports routinely drop 40–60% at quality 65 with no visible difference. Files that were already encoded aggressively have little left to give.

Is recompressing lossy?

Yes — each lossy re-encode costs a little fidelity, invisible once but cumulative. Compress from the original when you can, and judge with the built-in compare slider.

Is EXIF metadata kept?

No — the output is written clean: EXIF, GPS and camera details are stripped. For images headed to the web that is usually the safer default.

Is it private?

Yes. The pixels are decoded and re-encoded right in your browser — images are never uploaded, and the server does nothing but deliver this page. Close the tab and no trace of your photos remains. Want proof? Run one file through, switch your connection off, and run another — it still works.
