Developing NEF without Nikon software
NEF is Nikon’s RAW container, and opening it usually means installing NX Studio or a commercial editor. Here the develop happens in the browser: demosaic, camera white balance, sRGB out — LibRaw’s faithful defaults. Mixed-brand shoots belong on the generic RAW converter; the finished JPGs shrink further with Compress JPG or convert to WebP for the web.
Compressed NEF vs uncompressed
Nikon bodies write NEF in up to three flavors: lossless compressed (the default on most cameras — about a third smaller, pixels mathematically identical), plain compressed (“visually lossless”, smaller still), and uncompressed (mostly older bodies and cautious menus). The size difference lives entirely on the memory card.
For this converter it is a non-question: all three decode through the same LibRaw path and develop to the same JPG. If you have been shooting uncompressed out of caution, the lossless-compressed menu option buys card space and costs nothing that survives to the develop.

Which Nikon bodies does this cover?
Anything writing standard NEF that LibRaw reads — decades of D-SLRs and Z mirrorless bodies. Compressed and uncompressed NEF variants both develop.
Will it look like the camera’s JPG?
Close — the camera white balance and standard demosaicing are applied. Nikon Picture Controls (vivid, flat …) are creative extras the standard develop does not reproduce.
What resolution does the JPG keep?
Full sensor resolution by default. Use the resize control to cap the longest side, or target-size mode to hit an exact file size.
Is it private?
Yes. The conversion happens entirely on your device — the image is read, re-encoded and saved without ever touching a network. There is no server-side queue, no temporary copy in some bucket, nothing to expire or leak. Want proof? Run one file through, switch your connection off, and run another — it still works.
