From JPG to editable vectors

Tracing turns pixels into geometry: paths that stay sharp at billboard size and open in any vector editor. It shines on graphics that were rasterized somewhere along the way — a logo that only survives as a JPG, a scanned sketch, hand lettering. Photographs are the wrong input: they trace into heavy approximations, usually larger than the JPG itself; keep those on Compress JPG. The finished vector can be minified further with Compress SVG.

JPEG noise and the Detail dial

JPEG compression sprinkles subtle noise around edges, and a tracer faithfully picks it up as tiny stray shapes. If the result looks speckled, lower the Detail slider — it merges small artifacts away — and clean, high-quality sources always trace best. Black & white mode ignores color noise entirely, which makes it the most forgiving choice for scans.

Frequently asked questions

Which JPGs vectorize well?

Logos, lettering, scanned line art and drawings with flat areas. The cleaner and sharper the source, the better the trace — heavily compressed or photographic JPGs come out rough.

Why is the SVG larger than my JPG?

Detailed images need many paths to approximate, and each path costs bytes. Simple graphics produce small SVGs; photos rarely do — that is inherent to tracing, not a bug.

What is the black & white mode for?

It traces a single-color stencil — ideal for cutting machines, stamps, watermarks and one-color print, and it shrugs off JPEG color noise.

Are my images uploaded?

No — the pixels never leave your machine. Decoding and re-encoding both happen in your browser; there is no upload to wait for and no server-side copy to worry about afterwards. Want proof? Run one file through, switch your connection off, and run another — it still works.
