When PNG is the right exit

PNG opens in everything made in the last twenty-five years and keeps transparency intact — the safe handoff to editors and workflows that predate AVIF. The price is bytes: lossless PNG cannot match a lossy AVIF for size. If the result feels heavy, the PNG compressor shrinks it losslessly, and AVIF to JPG is the smaller pick when transparency does not matter.

Opening AVIF at all

Decoding uses your browser’s built-in AVIF support — any current Chrome, Edge or Firefox, and Safari from 16.1 on. If a file is refused on an older browser, updating the browser is the fix; nothing is wrong with the file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the conversion lossless?

Yes — at the default quality 100 the decoded image is written to PNG without touching a pixel, transparency included. Lowering the slider switches to palette PNGs that are smaller but slightly lossy.

Will the PNG be bigger than the AVIF?

Almost always, and often dramatically — AVIF is one of the tightest lossy formats and PNG is lossless. That is the price of universal compatibility, not a fault in the file.

Why PNG instead of JPG?

JPG is far smaller but flattens transparency onto white and re-compresses lossily. Pick PNG for editing and transparency; JPG for plain sharing.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No — the pixels never leave your machine. Decoding and re-encoding both happen in your browser; there is no upload to wait for and no server-side copy to worry about afterwards. Want proof? Run one file through, switch your connection off, and run another — it still works.
