When M4A makes sense — and when it does not

M4A/AAC is what iPhones, iTunes and audiobook apps speak natively, and some of them accept nothing else. But this is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode: quality cannot improve, only the packaging changes — so keep the MP3 masters and convert only where a tool demands M4A. Will my audio sound better as M4A?

No — re-encoding lossy audio cannot restore what MP3 encoding removed. AAC holds quality slightly better at matching bitrates, but converting existing MP3s is about compatibility, not fidelity.

Why do some apps insist on M4A?

Apple tooling, audiobook chapters and some podcast pipelines are built around the MP4 audio container. M4A slots in natively where MP3 gets refused or re-processed.

What bitrate should I use?

Match or exceed the source — 192 kbps is a safe default that avoids stacking audible loss on top of the original encode.
