Where “page X of Y” matters
The “3 / 12” form does more than count — the total is a completeness claim. Anyone holding page 3 of 12 can see that nine pages are missing, which is exactly what several kinds of documents need:

What format do the numbers use?
“3 / 12” — the page and the total, small and gray at the bottom center. Every page gets one, starting from 1.
Will numbers overlap my footer?
They sit in the bottom margin (about 8 mm up). Documents with unusually deep footers could collide — check one page after running; the original file stays untouched either way.
Does numbering change quality or size?
No — it draws a few characters of text per page. The content is not re-encoded and the size change is negligible.
Is it private?
Yes. The document never leaves your browser — nothing is uploaded, and the server only delivers this page. That makes it safe for contracts, invoices, medical records — anything you would not email to a stranger. Want proof?
