What flattening means

ASS is a typesetting format: fonts, colors, positioning, karaoke effects — all encoded as override tags inside the dialogue. SRT carries none of that, so the tags are removed, `\N` breaks become real line breaks, and each Dialogue line becomes a numbered SRT cue. Centisecond ASS timing is converted to milliseconds exactly.

Honest about the losses

Signs, songs and karaoke that relied on positioning will read as plain stacked text — that is inherent to SRT, not a converter flaw. Dialogue tracks convert cleanly. If the target is web video rather than a desktop player, SRT to VTT takes the result the rest of the way.

Frequently asked questions

Are SSA files supported too?

Yes — SSA is the older dialect of the same format and parses the same way. Both .ass and .ssa extensions are accepted.

What happens to karaoke and sign typesetting?

The effects are stripped and the underlying text stays. SRT simply cannot express animated or positioned text, so this is the honest best any converter can do.

Does the timing stay frame-accurate?

ASS stores centiseconds; SRT stores milliseconds. Conversion is exact — cues start and end precisely where they did.

Are my files uploaded?
